To Lose Weight, Skip the Calorie Counting

Despite what most people say, when you think about it, how annoying is calorie counting?? I mean really! Who wants to sit there all day and subtract calorie after calorie from a daily tally each time they eat something? Not only that, but who wants to have to stop themselves from eating something that is good for them just because they ran out of calories for the day?? When you think about it, who does that??

Now, to some people calorie counting might make sense…in some weird way. And it might be easy and fun for them…or something like that. But the rest of us don’t care to be bothered by even more constant numbers in our lives. Not only that but have you considered how annoying it must be to have to calorie count in social events? If you go out to eat, I can pretty much guarantee that there are very few, if any, restaurants that actually provide the calorie count of the menu items. Oh and if you are attending a family function or a friend’s dinner party, how rude is it to ask about the calorie count of each food served??

If those reasons don’t make you want to run, think about the fact that counting calories is so boring! In fact, it’s so boring that you will end up estimating all day long; the calorie count of each food is based on the weight so if you’re estimating the weight and possibly estimating with a lower number, then your calorie count is already off. Then you realize you’re eating less…but somehow you’re not losing weight! And then you start to panic and all of a sudden, eating becomes this horribly stressful task to make sure you’re eating enough calories and are still losing weight.

Doesn’t sound fun, right? Well, don’t worry because there is definitely an easier way to lose weight without having to swim in numbers all day! It’s not about having to count calories but, keep in mind, it’s still important to know what calories are and which foods contain empty calories. And to answer your question, calories are a source of energy for your body so eating calories is important for everyone, especially for physically active individuals. Here are some great guidelines to think about so you don’t have to follow strict, demanding rules:

1. Make wise food choices:

The key here is to learn what the best foods to eat actually are. We all know that fried chicken is bad for you, but did you also know that even breaded food, including fish, is also not good for you? The basic foods you should always be eating are meats (think chicken, beef, and fish), vegetables, fruits and multi-grain products (think multi-grain breads and pastas). These are foods you should always eat, regardless of the calorie count. Other foods, such as pastries and other sweets, should always be eaten in moderation. But, some foods, like fried foods, fast foods and other junk, should just be avoided all together! You body is a finely tuned engine, so treat it to the best fuel possible!!

2. Drink carefully:

The best thing to drink, hands down, is water, period. The second best is herbal tea. The worst? Alcohol, sodas, sports drinks, fruit juice, milky stuff, such as smoothies. So here’s what you do, don’t drink those worst things! Instead, make sure to drink plenty of water and plenty of herbal tea! Green tea is caffeinated and actually has more caffeine than coffee so choose that instead in the morning. Make sure to always keep yourself well hydrated, whether you do or don’t exercise.

3. Small but more:

What that means is basically – smaller portions more often. Instead of 3 large meals a day, choose 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day. This will keep your metabolism up, which is good for those who are not exercising and for those who do exercise, it’s even better! Not only that but eating more in smaller portions will keep you away from those horrible vending machines full of junk!

So you can now throw that whole calorie counting idea out the window when it comes to successful ways to lose weight because that is clearly not an effective one or even fun for that matter! Make wise health decisions and you won’t have to work so hard to lose weight!

Why Calorie Counting Just Does Not Work

Why Calorie Counting Just Does Not Work

It may, at first glance, seem to make sense. Counting the number of calories you eat in a day might seem like it would help you to lose weight. But limiting the total number of calories eaten per day is not the best way to lose weight. There are a few reasons why and I’m sure, once you read these reasons, you’ll agree that calorie counting just does not work for weight loss!

Don’t get me wrong, it might work for some people, for example, people who have all the time in the world to prepare their own food, to shop for an hour getting groceries. If you’re like most people, you don’t have that kind of time. Even if you’re not in an office all day long, do you really have that extra time? Probably not. So it stands to reason that calorie counting is really not for everyone. It’s tedious, time consuming and a total waste of time for most people.

But that’s not the reason why calorie counting doesn’t work. That’s just what happens when you try to apply calorie counting to real life. Life gets in the way!

The quality of calories plays a large role in your total calorie intake. For example, low calorie foods do not contain calories of good quality. It’s pretty much garbage, empty calories combined with a whole bunch of chemicals to make you full. Calories are sources of energy for your body so just as you would upgrade to the best of the best, the top of the line in something, you should also be eating the best of the best to provide your body with the best source of energy as well as nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. Low calorie foods are the farthest thing from the top of the line anything! They have very little, if any nutrients, and are a horrible source of real energy. Sure, you may feel a quick boost but on those foods, it’s gone in a flash!

Hidden calories will get you! So many foods have hidden calories that to try and stay under a certain number in today’s world is nearly impossible unless you prepare EVERY meal for yourself. Think about it, do you really prepare each and every meal you eat in a day? I mean sure, some people do. But in the morning, how about that cup of coffee? Did you make it straight out of the coffee can? Or did you pour it after someone else made it? Or did you buy it at a coffee shop? Or how about the bagel or muffin you bought for breakfast? There are so many foods that have a ton of calories that you wouldn’t necessarily assume would. Not only that but if you tend to eat out, how often do you ever see a restaurant list the number of calories in each of its meal offerings? I know I’ve never seen that!

If you’re serious about losing weight, and I mean actual body fat (not just water weight), then calorie counting will not work for you. The real key is to eat healthy, wholesome fresh foods, such as fruits, vegetables and high quality meats. When you eat healthy, your body will be energized with great calories and nutrients. Even if you don’t exercise, this is a significantly better way to lose weight than with any silly fad diet available today. Exercising will catapult your success though. Once you eat healthy and exercise, losing weight will come easily!

Coffee, it gets you going in the morning, but could also be adding to your waistline. Those specialty coffee drinks are packed with calories and fat. But if you can’t give up you gourmet cup of joe, here are a few healthy changes you can make that will still satisfy your taste buds.

How Calorie Counting is Pointless

How Calorie Counting is Pointless

Forget about the tediousness and boring aspects of calorie counting because that depends on the person using this method. What you should also concentrate on in terms of why calorie counting sucks as a method of losing weight is the actual fact that you won’t lose weight this way. How’s that, you ask? Well let’s count the ways calorie counting doesn’t work to help you lose weight!

1. Even if you minimize the number of calories you are eating, if the foods you do eat are not nutritious, talk about self-defeating! For example, say you eat something that is low in calories, something like a low-calorie pretzel pack or something, well it may be great that you’re eating minimal calories but pretzels? Those are definitely not nutritious! Or, maybe you’re drinking a low-calorie soda. Here’s the thing, newsflash, there is no such thing as a healthy soda! The amount of sugar in those things is just horrifying! Forget about losing weight if you drink soda.

2. Calories play hide and go seek all the time! Things that you may not originally think had calories are actually chock full of them. Take for example a common iced coffee drink at a popular coffee establishment. You wouldn’t think so but those coffees have a ton of calories in them, nearly half as many calories as what is required daily! Now, daily, for most people is around 1000-1300 calories per day. Half of that is roughly 500-750 calories a pop. All in one drink. Think about that! According to the whole calorie counting thing, you’ve already spent half of your daily allowed intake. Are you full? At all? I bet not! What a waste of calories! Oh and don’t forget, those coffees are full of sugar, another enemy in weight loss!

3. While you’re watching the number of calories you’re eating, you still have to maintain healthy nutrition! Talk about a task and a half! You need to keep up the levels of protein, carbs and fats that you eat. Can you really bother to count calories while having to keep tabs on your protein, carb and fat intake? An easier way to make sure you get enough protein, carbs and fat is just by eating healthy! For protein, go with meats or even nuts as a snack. Carbs are easy and you can find them in fruits and pastas. As far as fat is concerned, make sure the fats you eat are good for your body as a whole so opt for fish with omega-3 fatty acids and meats or poultry that are cooked in healthy oils such as olive or coconut.

If you’re genuinely serious about losing weight, don’t bother with calorie counting or any other fad diet. Just stick to the basics and things will go smoothly. The best way to approach this is by looking at your new dietary habits as a lifestyle change. You are going to have to look at food in a different way, as a source of energy and nutrition, eating to live instead living to eat, which is how you got to this point in the first place. So change your lifestyle to a healthy, nutritious one and you’ll soon see the weight loss and overall health benefits that you deserve!
